The new SNS 4074K device type has been added to Wieland Electric’s family of safety-oriented standstill monitors. It monitors the pulse frequency of sensors such as inductive and magnetoresistive proximity switches and incremental encoders, and safely switches off the dangerous movement when the limit frequency set on the safety module is exceeded.

Standstill monitors protect operators of machines and systems against dangerous movement. One of the main areas of application For the trade press SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010 November, 23– 25, 2010 Key word: SNS 4074K standstill monitor 2 Press Release: 2010-11-268 is the control of tumblers in electric locking facilities. In this case, access to a dangerous machine part is only granted when the machine movement no longer poses a risk for the operator. Two device types with different functionality are now available for safetyoriented standstill monitoring: The new SNS 4074K and the SNS 4084K. The new safety relay has a bypass input, which allows safetyoriented bypassing of the monitoring function. Device type SNS 4084K, on the other hand, has an input for the implementationof a start override, which allows electric locking facilities to be locked during machine start-up. The limit frequency to be monitored is adjustable between 0.1 and 99 Hz. It is set via two rotary switches and is permanently stored in the device via a simple configuration process.

SNS-series standstill monitors are only 22.5 mm wide, and are equipped with either pluggable screw terminals or spring force terminals. The devices can be used in safety-oriented applications up to PL e (Category 4) according to EN ISO 13849-1 or SILCL 3 according to EN 62061. They can be used with any machine drive technology, which is why they are especially suited for use as a safety-oriented retrofit in existing machines or systems.

The best connection for photovoltaic systems

Wieland Electric’s PST 40i1 photovoltaic plug connectors have

passed this year’s extensive product test in the specialist magazine

“Photon” with top grades, once again proving the extremely high

quality of this product. They meet the requirements of the

DIN EN 50521:2009-10 standard for plug connectors in photovoltaic

systems, and despite a high current carrying capability of up to

40 A, they can be handled safely and mounted in just a few steps.

Wieland Electric’s PST 40i1 photovoltaic plug connectors have passed this year’s extensive product test in the specialist magazine “Photon” with top grades, once again proving the extremely high quality of this product. They meet the requirements of the DIN EN 50521:2009-10 standard for plug connectors in photovoltaic systems, and despite a high current carrying capability of up to 40 A, they can be handled safely and mounted in just a few steps.

After the photovoltaic plug connectors ranked among the best products in the“Photon” test last year, the pre-assembled version of the PST 40i1 connector took first place in this year’s test, with the version for assembly in the field ranking among the 10 best plug connector types. Overall, 40 plug connectors from 24 manufacturers were tested.

Wieland’s photovoltaic plug connectors achieved excellent results in the test category “transition resistance”, which greatly affects the power loss in a photovoltaic system. Wieland uses brass turned contacts which are silver-plated. This keeps the transition resistance extremely low, even after 100tested plugging cycles and a long service life.

Unlike many of the other tested products, Wieland’s plug connectors are suitable for high currents of up to 40 A and they were the only product tested which can be used with connection cross-sections of up to 10 mm². This also provides a margin of safety for overload or lightning strikes.

The mating and disconnect forces also scored high marks, as they ensure high operational reliability. Wieland plug connectors are latchable and have an extremely high retention force. This avoids unintentional disconnection and prevents dangerous arcing when the plug connectors are disconnected during operation. The cable disconnect forces are so high that exposed cable ends do not present a safety hazard, regardless of the strain on the cable. The difference between the latching retention force and the cable disconnect force is therefore extremely high. Nonetheless, the photovoltaic plug connectors can be connected easily, as the innovative design keeps the mating forces extremely low. A latching clip is also available as an option, which can only be opened using a tool. This additional latching means that the plug 3 Press Release: 2010-11-263 connectors fulfill the requirements for the American market according to NEC 2008; they have also been approved by the American testing institute ETL according to UL standards.

The photovoltaic plug connector grip is made of dyed black plastic which is highly UV and ozone-resistant. The photovoltaic plug connectors are resistant to heat, cold, dirt and moisture, they are impact-proof and fulfill degree of protection IP 67 and even IP 68 on request.

For safety reasons, wind power plant towers must be fully and safely illuminated. In the past, fluorescent lamps with emergency light function were used for this purpose. However, their relatively short maintenance intervals and short service life are a major disadvantage. Standard installation in the tower is also laborintensive and time-consuming. Wieland Electric’s provenpodis®®power bus system with the new high-powerpodis®LED lamps is a much more efficient solution. Installation, maintenance and operation are easier and safer, as well as being less costly and time-consuming.

Thepodis®installation solution for wind power plants consists of the uncut flat cable power bus and various function modules (e.g. For the trade press SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010 November, 23– 25, 2010 Key word: LED lighting for the towers of wind power plants 2 Press Release: 2010-11-266 sockets and LEDs) for direct plug-in. A homogenous illumination of the tower is important. The light distribution is therefore specifically designed for the cylindrical form of the tower in order toensure optimum illumination of the tower stairwell without interfering, dazzling effects.

LEDs with a ten-times longer service life compared to fluorescent lights are used to illuminate the tower. They are not subject to maintenance intervals, and the LEDs immediately switch to full light output even at low temperatures. In the robustpodis®housings with degree of protection IP 65, the LEDs are suitable for use in harsh ambient conditions. The LEDs are designed for extreme ambient temperatures of -40°C to +70°C, and can be used in CCV (Cold Climate Version) and HCV (Hot Climate Version) temperature ranges. With their operating voltage of 24 V DC and their low power consumption of 5 W per LED, it is possible to implement a maintenance-friendly emergency lighting solution with a central supplyaccording to DIN EN60598-22 in an economically viable way. This central solution facilitates the necessary replacement of the buffer battery while saving time and costs. Even in towers with a height above 100 meters, voltage drops pose no problem thanks to the wide input voltage range of 15 to 30 VDC with full light output.

Reliable operation is ensured even in the event of an error. Thanks to the short-circuit and overload protection integrated into every single lamp, errors do not spread and are easily located. The compact LED lamps can be replaced without the use of tools and without switching off the rest of the tower lighting.

Uniform interface for lights offers greater freedom in planning

Thegesis®TOP adapter from Wieland, the market leader for pluggable electrical installations, made it possible to install built-in lighting systems with pluggable technology as an alternative to the conventional method. The reaction from the lighting industry and demand forgesis®TOP are a testament to this revolutionary approach.

Many lighting manufacturers now also utilize this great advantage to offer pluggable standard lights and thus to minimize the need for special versions. Following thegesis®TOP success story, a manufacturer-independent, open standard was developed with LINECT, which adopted and further developed the basic idea from Wieland. We can now present the newest member of ourgesis®installation family:gesis®LINECT.

The LINECT uniform interface for lighting was introduced for the first time at the 2010"Light+Building" international lighting and building technology trade fair. It should significantly simplify pluggable installation of built-in lighting and make connecting to pluggable connector systems from a variety of manufacturers possible. The new standard interface will be supported by well-known light manufacturers, and LINECT-compatible components will be offered by manufacturers of pluggable connector systems and light connecting terminals. For this purpose, Wieland Electric is launching thegesis®LINECT pluggable connector system on the market.

The idea has become the standard

Connecting built-in lighting with pluggable technology has been the standard at Wieland Electric for a long time. Short installation times and faster and safer handling, as well as simple room conversion, are all unbeatable advantages of pluggable installation. Wieland’s groundbreakinggesis®TOP lighting adapter is now being developed into a manufacturer-independent LINECT interface, and has provided the open standard for the lighting industry.gesis®LINECT is the adapter interface between lights and light connecting terminals for the market-leadinggesis®pluggable connector system. It will initially be available in a 3-pole version for 230 V / 16 A, and also - from the 4th quarter 2010 onwards - as a 5-pole version for 230 V with a DALI. A 4-pole version for emergency lighting (single battery) and a 2-pole model for DALI applications are planned. The advantage: Due to the separation of the power supply and the DALI signal cable, two narrow terminals are used instead of a single wide one. LINECT connections thus also allow especially narrow built-in lights to be fitted with dimmers.gesis®LINECT plug connectors are easy to connect and contact to the LINECT light terminal on the top side of the lights. They also can be disconnected. Mismating is impossible as the components and the various versions are mechanically and color coded. The lights are simple to connect using pre-assembled plug connectors. Unusedgesis®LINECT plug connectors are touch protected.

Universal system simplifies planning and installation

The standardized LINECT interface offers building owners, planners and installation technicians many advantages, from simplified quotes to safe and quick installation. The goal of the open LINECT standard is to give the user more freedom to make decisions in choosing a pluggable connector system. Lighting manufacturers will see a reduced variety of versions. This allows all lights with a LINECT logo to be connected with all LINECT-labeled plug connectors, completely independent of the manufacturer. The patent protected interface can be used with a license agreement by light and component manufacturers all over the world. Additionally, lights equipped with the LINECT label can still be connected conventionally, just like before. Installation planning is made especially simple. Quotes for lighting and plug connector systems can be done separately and independent of the manufacturer. This allows the trades to be clearly presented. Rooms can be converted in an environmentally conscious way by reusing lights and wiring systems. LINECT products must only be introduced if they are certified by VDE or KEMA in accordance with EN 61535, EN 61984, EN 60598.
